2004-11-xx - Mixmag.net (U.K.) - Martin Gore Interview (excerpt)

http://www.depechemode.dk/news/04/news__october2004.htm

(...)

We hear you've been DJing.
Martin: It's a hobby for me. I don't think I could get into DJing a few times a week because I like it to be special. I bought about 80 cds during the week prior to my London gig but I usually find only ten tracks that I like. I doubt we'll ever see Dave DJ, but hey, stranger things have happened.

2004-11-04 - Depeche Mode - Martin to DJ in Berlin

[N.B. Later, German fans found out that the event was not "invitation-only", even thought BRAT assured them that he was told that it was per invitation only.]

http://oldsite.depechemode.com/news/index5.htm

Martin to DJ in Berlin
Martin will be DJ'ing at "Cookies", in Berlin, Germany. Also on the bill are Miss Kitten, Gudrun Gut and Thomas Fehlmann (performing live). The event will be on November 8th, at 11pm. Sadly, it is an "invite-only" event. There will be no general admission.

I doubt many DM fans showed up. I was surprised to hear about the flyers. This was a rather last minute thing, and Martin did not really want his presence promoted (hence why it was not featured as "news" on his/DM's web site).
Nothing really new anyway. Meetings are over. Xmas break is on. Recording in a few weeks.
BRAT

I have also found this undetermined photo, but I'm assuming it must have been from this night:

2005-01-12 - Instanbul - unannounced DJ gig

[Client did a gig in Istanbul at the Roxy Club on Jan 12th 2005. The have done gigs there before and Andy Fletcher usually joins, so Martin probably joined him.]

Some quotes from fans who were there: http://www.depeche-mode.com/forum/index.php?topic=12072.0:
Quote
Last night Martin was on stage. First he made a "DJ set". And then he joined the group called "Rebel Moves" on stage. He sang some parts of the songs and he performed even "enjoy the silence" on stage. When the people kept on shouting "Martin, Martin..!", he came to the mic again saying "Rebel, Rebel..!"... A funny and special night for DM fans... Tonight Client will be performing in the same place so the people are hoping to see Martin again with them especially while they perform "overdrive"...
Quote
My best buddy was at the Roxy in Istanbul last night...he told me the night was quite lame, Rebel Moves sucked, but that they played ETS with Martin on stage...he also said Martin used some parts of WIMS during his DJ setlist...that was it...not that I care about his personal life or anything, but apparently Martin spends quite a bit of time in Istanbul lately, because he has a Turkish girlfriend or something...this is like the 10th time since last summer a friend of mine says he saw Martin at a club in Istanbul...

Someone also posted an extensive report about this: http://www.radikal.com.tr/haber.php?haberno=140554

Martin Gore enişte
Kemal Yılmaz
Yardımcım Sevil geçen hafta pazartesi günü sevinç çığlıkları atarak odama daldı. "Doğruymuş Kemal bey, doğruymuş! İnanamıyorum, o, gerçekten İstanbul'daymış!"
N'oluyor yahu? Kim gerçekten İstanbul'daymış? Güçbela Sevil'i sakinleştirip neler olup bittiğini öğrenebildim.
Ertesi gün gece Roxy'nin yolunu tutuyorum.
Nihayet, Rebel Moves şu ünlü, sözlerini ezbere söyleyenlerin birer plaketi hak ettiğini düşündüğüm şarkısı 'Bandare'yi söylerken gecenin 'esas adamı' sahneye çıkıyor ve Rebel Moves'a eşlik ediyor. Sonra gitarını aldı eline, Depeche Mode'un klasiklerinden 'Enjoy the Silence'ı söyledi filan.

This DJ gig was also stated in a Turkish news article from 2006: http://arama.hurriyet.com.tr/arsivnews.aspx?id=4828419

And Andy Fletcher stated that has Martin DJ'ed there a couple of times, in this 2008 interview with Martin Gore and Andy Fletcher: http://www.showhaber.com/turk-seyircisini-seviyorlar-84369.htm
Quote
Türkiye’ye daha önce iki kere geldiniz. Türk seyircisini nasıl buldunuz?
- A.F.: Türk seyircisini seviyoruz.

2005-06-01 - Hiro Ballroom NYC - Martin Gore DJ

[Some time later, Alex English, fellow DJ to have performed on this night, posted the following message on the DMMB: http://forums.depechemode.com/forum/showthread.php?t=16668&page=4]
Quote
I was also one of the organiser for Martin Gore's DJ set in NYC. and i got some insight from that experience that may illuminate a few things about Exciter. firstly, the original offer was for Fletch to DJ. But upon finding out thru their representatives that Martin was really into the idea of DJing the event since it was actually a secret Kraftwerk afterparty (w/ some of Kraftwerk in attendance). Martin also wanted to "practice" for his Sonar DJ set in Spain.

Some photos (sources unknown):

On June 3rd, the promotor of the venue posted this on their website: www.GBH.tv

Thanks to everyone who came down to see Depeche Mode's Martin Gore lay down some freaky electronic beats at Hiro. For those of you who missed them, Kraftwerk, Andy Rourke (of The Smiths), King Britt, Andy Fletcher (Depeche Mode), Jr. Sanchez, Tommie Sunshine, Brazilian Girls and Christina Aguilera (is that how you spell it?) came down for the event. Thanks to Alex English for helping to hook the whole thing up.

Celebrity Spin
Rock Stars Are Not DJs—But DJs Are Rock Stars
By Tricia Romano
(…)
Detractors of the celeb-DJ trend blame it for the current club scene stagnating into a distant past of New Order's "Blue Monday," Depeche Mode's "Personal Jesus," and Blondie's "Heart of Glass." Even new club music tends toward copycat bands. But English says that, by booking a member of Erasure, he's linking current '80s-sounding bands like the Killers and the Bravery—"a whole genre of Depeche Mode wannabes"—to their influences.
Yet you have to wonder what link to the past the audience supposedly gleaned when Depeche Mode's Martin Gore showed up last summer and spun minimal German techno to a roomful of people expecting to hear New Order's "Temptation." "They didn't care," says Sunshine. "If he would've played a bunch of '80s hits, the place would've been unhinged. But that isn't what he did. And by the time he was done, half the people were gone."

2005-11-02 - Gay Wired (US) - Interview Martin Gore

http://www.gaywired.com/article.cfm?section=10&id=7564

A La Mode
By Lawrence Ferber

(...)

This album’s got some groove to it. Were you in a dancing mood this time around?
[Laughs] I think all that sort of stuff comes out subconsciously. I’ve been DJing a bit over the last couple of years and listening to a lot more dance music. I started DJing at a friend’s bar and Fletcher has also been DJing extensively, traveling all over the world.

What do you like to spin? Any faves?
Quite hard techno, minimal house. Not sure what you call it – too many genres, too many names these days. I like James T. Cotton...

2006-12-17 - Old Kings Pub - Martin to DJ

Martin did a DJ gig on this night in his local pub, without an announcement on the official DM website. Some photos (sources photos unknown):
