2009-03-20 - Neufutur (US) - Mirror’s new album gets more critical kudos

Beginning with “Nostalgia,” which features Depeche Mode vocalist Dave Gahan in one of his most passionate performances, Mirror immediately presents a sonic landscape of divergent synth textures and classical undertones, with a grinding guitar solo to boot.

Much as a filmmaker uses characters to tell the story, Anselmi says, he employs notable voices like celebrated Depeche Mode baritone Dave Gahan, who turns Mirror’s opening ballad, Nostalgia, into a stadium-sized anthem, with some brilliant keyboard contributions from David Bowie pianist-of-choice Mike Garson. A video clip of Gahan singing Nostalgia went viral in Europe a few months ago, causing a serious stir amongst the Mode hordes and a significant download windfall.
“Originally, I envisioned the song as something out of a Disney movie sung by Snow White to a little bird perched on her finger. That changed when Dave got ahold of it,” says Anselmi.

It also helps to have friends like Dave Gahan of Depeche Mode bless the album with his most unique and tortured voice in “Nostalgia” as the album begins. The musical layers of this album are quite extraordinary with no shortage of strings, piano, orchestral sounds, and deep lyrics that take you to another place. That’s the type of records that make you feel good that you listened to it all the way through without any dissapointments.

4. You collaborated with members of Depeche Mode, Bowie’s band, etc. How did you select the outside artists for this project and why did you decide that using them was a must?
Everyone involved in MIRROR was a friend or someone we admired. If I thought of someone to use, we just asked. That really is a product of the new digital world. The ease of communication, sharing files for collaboration etc. Also the lack of label involvement makes it easier to follow your dreams without negotiation.

Punk Globe: The videos you've done for MIRROR (especially 'Nostalgia') are like slow-moving collages that tell a story with their associations and the emotions they bring up. On the 'Love Story' album from 1997, you had a series of your collages filled with dichotic images from future and past; innocence and evil; nature, media, and technology all melding together into this powerful, abstract story. Do you feel like technology has finally caught up with your imagination?
T.A.: Those are kind words. I do feel comfortable working in collage. It was really exciting and a little nerve racking using Dave Gahan's performance as an element in those video collages for Nostalgia. My brother and I shot all the elements. A lot of the backgrounds were shot by us in Poland. I wanted to reveal the subtext of the song through the video. Still, now the video has become kind of a shrine for Depeche Mode fans.

2015-12-07 - Side-Line (Belgium) - Mirror’s self titled album feat. Depeche Mode’s Dave Gahan released on vinyl

Mirror’s self titled album feat. Depeche Mode’s Dave Gahan released on vinyl

Out in February 2016, but available now for pre-order (USA / EU), is a remastered reissue, on both vinyl and CD, of Mirror’s debut “Mirror” album. The vinyl edition comes in a gatefold sleeve that includes many images from Mirror’s multi-media shows. Lyrics are also included on a printed inner sleeve. A limited to 200 edition on red vinyl is available for collectors (order it here in EU / order it here in the USA). The CD and vinyl is a replica of the original out of print independent release and comes in a digipak with a 16-page booklet.

Mirror is the project by Canadian artist Thomas Anselmi who has a long history in the Canadian music scene. He founded the Vancouver punk-rock act Slow in the 80s and was also at the center of Circle C, who more or less invented Radiohead’s sound before they did in the 90s.

On “Mirror” you’ll find a rather impressive cast: Dave Gahan (Depeche Mode) takes on vocal duties for the album opener “Nostalgia”; Joe Dallesandro makes an appearance on “City Lights”; Mike Garson (the pianist from David Bowie’s “Alladin Sane”) contributes; as do guitarist Knox Chandler, former Grapes of Wrath keyboardist Vincent Jones (who produced the record), and Download collaborator Phil Western.

Below are 2 tracks from the release.
