Andrew Fletcher: Miscellaneous
« on: 20 February 2012 - 02:05:19 »
This thread includes all public appearances as published by the media which do not involve Andy in the role of a member of Depeche Mode, nor as a DJ or former label manager of Client, but as himself. Any news items relating to a DM/solo project or published in the time that he had to promote such a project, will be put in the appropriate thread elsewhere.

Please let me know if you know of/have any news items that should be in there but aren't.

1989-05-xx - Wire - Eardrum Buzz

[In 1989, a band called 'Wire' released a music video to promote their single "Eardrum Buzz". For the music video, they asked all kinds of celebrities to pretend to have an annoying buzz in their ears. As a result, you can see Andy Fletcher at 0:35 seconds into the video, as well as a very convincing Vince Clarke at 0:28.]

1997-02-13 - Belfast Telegraph (UK) - Gascognes Review

http://web.archive.org/web/20010827034706/http://depeche-mode.com/quotes/quote.htm

Gascognes
There's a restaurant round the corner from my house which is called 'Gascognes'. I thought to myself, 'I wonder if the owner is a rather portly gentleman which shock-bleached hair, an England football kit, a criminally offensive wardrobe and who sings 'Fog on the Tyne' a lot, shouts 'Whay-ay man' and eats his way through most of the menu himself?' However, it wasn't the man I was thinking of. But get this, the owner of the trendy eatery is none other than Andy Fletcher from Depeche Mode! Surely he should have called it 'Meals for the Masses'? Apparently the 'Master and Servant' side salad is just lovely.

All I wanna do ... is sue you
by John Stokdyk

A leading member of the chart-topping pop group Depeche Mode and his record company boss have accepted a massive, undisclosed payout from Levy Gee following allegations the firm mishandled investments in Lloyds of London.
Keyboard player Andy Fletcher and Daniel Miller, chief executive of Mute Records, alleged the Group A firm was in breach of duties to its clients including fiduciary duties and was grossly negligent in its handling of their investments.
A final judgment in the case was expected as we went to press, but was delayed after the two sides failed to agree costs in the case. The dispute over costs arose after they agreed undisclosed damages, estimated to be at least z100,000.
Fletcher, one of the songwriting team that gave Depeche Mode a string of Top 10 hits and an international following, alleged Levy Gee advised him to invest in a prominent Lloyds of London syndicate which was allged to be closely associated with the firm and suffered severe losses during the early 1990s.

1998-07-04 - The Lawyer (UK) - Deadlines clarified by court

http://www.thelawyer.com/deadlines-clarified-by-court/80161.article

Deadlines clarified by court
The last minute acceptance of a payment into court has led to a ruling which spells out deadline requirements, reports Roger Pearson

The Recent settlement of an action in which investors alleged an accountancy firm had led them into a disastrous investment foray, in which they became Names at Lloyd's, has clarified rules on deadlines for accepting payments into court.
Andy Fletcher, keyboard player with pop group Depeche Mode, and Daniel Miller, chairman and owner of Mute Records, claimed that by reason of their assets, income investment policy and attitude to risk, they were unsuitable candidates for Lloyd's and should never have been encouraged to become names by top London accountancy firm Levy Gee. They also accused Levy Gee of accepting undisclosed commissions in respect of the Lloyd's transactions.
The case was settled more or less on the eve of it opening, with Fletcher accepting, within good time, an undisclosed figure in settlement of his claim against Levy Gee.
But it was not until 13 March (with the case due to start on 16 March), that Miller instructed his solicitors, Swycher & Co, to accept a payment into court in settlement of his claim.
The settlement, while it dramatically curtailed legal argument, did not end the dispute. Levy Gee's lawyers argued that the acceptance by Miller of the money paid into court had been outside deadlines set out in the White Book.
If the deadline of accepting the payment into court within 21 days is met, the claimant gets his costs paid by the other side up to the time of the acceptance. However, if the deadline is not met, costs become a matter for the judge's discretion, and he could rule that the claimant must pay the defendant's costs from the date of the notice of payment into court. Even an order that both sides pay their own costs from the date of notice would have been likely to leave Miller out of pocket.
But, says Stephen Beverley of Swycher & Co, the White Book has always been "grey" when it comes to laying down timing rules in such matters.
A fax accepting the payment-in arrived at the offices of Levy Gee's solicitors at just after 5.30pm on 13 March, with a messenger arriving at the offices with a hard copy of the letter just after 7pm.
Levy Gee's solicitors argued that these two notifications were invalid because they had arrived out of time and had to be deemed not to have arrived until the morning of the next working day, 16 March.
However, Mr Justice Neuberger accepted the argument of Ian Mayes QC for Miller. the judge held that while the fax did not comply with the White Book rules which stipulate notification by fax must be made by 4pm on the 21st day the hard copy of the acceptance was in time, even though it had arrived after the offices had closed.
The judge held that the deadline for hard copies of acceptance was midnight on the 21st day and warned that there were dangers in situations such as these in drawing analogies with contractual acceptances. He went on to rule that with the fax out of time, and thus deemed served on Monday, but with the hard copy of the letter in time, the deadline had been met and Miller was entitled to his costs.
"The decision is one which has clarified a conundrum in law as far as acceptance of payments in is concerned," says Beverley. "It is a point that needs to be born closely in mind, though, by those who are leaving it to the last minute to accept money paid into court."

1999-02-19 - NME - Fletch's High Finance Disaster

http://web.archive.org/web/19990220192432/http://www.depeche-mode.com/news.htm

Fletch's High Finance Disaster
Keyboard player Andy Fletcher has accepted an undisclosed sum of damages following a disastrous foray into the world of high finance. He suffered huge losses after he became a 'name' at insurance company Lloyds. Fletcher sued his London accountants, Levy Gee, for alleged negligence, breach of trust and fiduciary duty and breach of contract. But at London's High Court on March 17, the judge was told Fletcher's claims had been settled. Terms of the settlement were not announced in court, but the court was told that in a similar action which was scheduled to be heard with Fletcher's record company boss, Daniel Miller, a 10,000 pound settlement had been accepted. This figure is understood to be very much lower than Fletcher's.

1999-02-xx - Deluxe (Poland?) - Interview with Andy Fletcher

http://www.depechemode.pl/bio_a_fletcher2.php

Adres restauracji Fletchera:
GASCOGNE
St.John's Wood Tube
12 Blenheim Terrace
London NW8
tel. 0171-625-7034 lub 0171-625-7036
Restauracja jest otwarta w godzinach:
poniedziałek - sobota 11:00 - 23:30
niedziela 11:00 - 22:30.

To miejscowa restauracja i znam 80% klientów.

Chcą wejść i wyjść w 25 minut.

"Jestem w domu. Widzę dzieci i kładę je spać. Około siódmej idę do restauracji, siadam w kącie baru. Biorę 2 szklaneczki wina, coś do jedzenia, widzę personel i przechadzam się z powrotem do domu. Kiedy nie koncertuje i nie nagrywam spędzam tak większość nocy w tygodniu.

2008-01-01 - HOME - Fletch hits the slopes for New Years!

http://www.depeche-mode.com/2008/01/01/fletch-hits-the-slopes-for-new-years/

Fletch hits the slopes for New Years!

In a somewhat amusing, not to mention self contradicting, article that popped onto the interweb on December 29th, Andrew Fletcher is one of the many trendy, famous, rich and powerful people who hits the Swiss alps for New Years.
In the article, which was posted on the Swiss tourist board site Swissinfo.ch, a local head of tourism, Daniel Luggen, is quoted as saying “our hotels are very discreet”, yet they manage to go on to list a very impressive list of celebrities’ vacationing plans.
Now that’s the kind of discretion that money simply cannot buy!
For those interested, and we all know we all are, the “reported”, “rumoured” and “possibly appearing” New Year Celebrating Celebrities (catching, huh?) include German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Russian President Vladimir Putin, American actor Johnny Depp, French president Nicholas Sarkozy, Ernesto Bertarelli, the French crooner Johnny Hallyday, Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone, German football legend, Günter Netzer, Prince Vittorio Emanuele of Savoy, billionaire businessman Richard Branson, actor Roger Moore, the Belgian royal family, and of course Andrew Fletcher of Depeche Mode, who’s boogeying down and generally freezing his ass off in fabulous Champéry with Liam Gallagher of Oasis and the guys from Daft Punk.
I am not saying they made it up, but just to prove that I didn’t, here’s a link!

2010-06-11 - MOJO (UK) - Andy Fletcher presents MOJO Medal Award to Daniel Miller

By Christopher Barrett

Former Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page was among a slew of veteran artists celebrated at the Mojo Awards in east London last night.
Along with Page’s induction into the Mojo hall of fame, Duane Eddy collected the icon award, Richard Thompson walked away with the Les Paul award, Roy Wood was presented with the classic songwriter prize and various members of Hawkwind were on hand to pick up the maverick award.
The event also celebrated the work of Mute Records founder Daniel Miller who was presented with the medal award by Depeche Mode’s Andrew Fletcher and Erasure’s Andy Bell. And while Jean-Michel Jarre was on hand to collect his lifetime achievement award, an onstage reunion of Teardrop Explodes, who were declared the winners of the Inspiration award, was hampered by the non-arrival of Julian Cope.
Meanwhile Richard Hawley won album of the year for Truelove’s Gutter and Kasabian’s Fire was declared song of the year.
It proved to be a great evening for Bella Union whose signings The Low Anthem and Midlake were both honoured.

Audi-O-Rama: Conference on the Future of Music
by Audi AG

Audi-O-Rama brings international music legends together
Giovanni Perosino, Head of Marketing Communication, AUDI AG: “With Audi-O-Rama we are creating a space where innovators and pioneers can explore the future of music together”
Publication on conference results
Audi invited music legends including Giorgio Moroder, Jean Michel Jarre and Andrew Fletcher, along with opinion leaders and multipliers from the music industry and journalism, for the first Audi-O-Rama conference on 21 and 22 November. The event held in Verbier, Switzerland, revolved around the future of music. Audi will publish results from the conference in 2016 as the “Manifesto on the Future of Music”.
Participants tried to offer a vision for music of the future during so-called “Big Talks,” which were followed by rounds of questions and answers. The pilot event for the format, which will be held every two years, was aimed at examining various elements of the music industry. Participants discussed new sales channels and music markets as well as alternative approaches to listening. They also examined the relationship between music and the brand with the four rings.
Giovanni Perosino, Head of Marketing Communication at AUDI AG, remarked alongside the event: “At this event we are discussing the parallels between music and the automotive industry in order to find out what the future will bring. And we are supporting dialogue between progressive minds, technology pioneers and innovators in the music business. This form of involvement in the arts has been an essential part of our Audi ArtExperience for more than 50 years.”
Along with Giorgio Moroder, Jean Michel Jarre and Andrew Fletcher, producer Daniel Miller and performance artist Laurie Anderson also participated in the discussions. People participating as multipliers included Sean Adams, Howie B., Adam Harper, Mathias Munk Modica and Roderich Fabian. The conference results including transcripts of the “Big Talks” will be published in spring 2016. Anyone interested in ordering a copy may do so by sending an e-mail to lena.hoppe@audi.de, while supplies last.

Born Andrew John Leonard Fletcher, also known as “Fletch”, he’s a founding member of electronic-teen-pop harbingers – later turned grown-up pop legends – Depeche Mode. Which makes him a legend (and an harbinger) too.
