SixToes Feat Dave Gahan
Low Guns (Toe Music)

Low Guns seeps into you like rising damp, but rising damp that you're secretly happy to let have its sporey way with your plastering. Depeche Mode's Dave Gahan returns a vocal favour after SixToes remixed Jezebel from their Sounds Of The Universe album, and it's an indulgent, melancholy business. It builds and builds to a howling, string-laden climax, with distant echoes of Talk Talk's more clamorous moments of discordant abandon. It's the type of music you might rub into a wound, an astringent salve for broken people who don't want to be fixed just yet.

2013-11-22 - Louder Than War (UK) - Single Review

http://louderthanwar.com/sixtoes-feat-dave-gahan-low-guns-single-review/

Sixtoes (feat. Dave Gahan): Low Guns – single review
by Paul Scott-Bates
DL/Cassette
Out Now
8.5/10

Cinematic folk music band, Sixtoes, release their new single. Louder Than War’s Paul Scott-Bates reviews.

Coincidentally released as Depeche Mode perform the UK leg of their current tour, or sensibly released the week after Remembrance Day, Low Guns is a sweeping gem that will have you humming afterwards and eager to hear again.

Taken from their forthcoming second album, The Morning After, the track features vocals from Dave Gahan whom the group approached after remixing tracks from Depeche’s Sounds Of The Universe album.

Based in London, but with founder members David Greenep and Ben Roger originally from Cornwall, the group are now a six piece and were allegedly named after a band member revealed they had six toes on each foot.

You may not know the name but they’ve got excellent credentials – touring with Jamie T and remixing the Nick Cave side project Grinderman. They also played on  Soulsavers‘ The Light The Dead Sea album (also featuring Gahan and widely acknowledged as his finest vocal performance). It’s easy to see why too. They’re a talented a lot as the sweeping string section on Low Guns demonstrates.

The track starts slowly with soft guitars and then gradually builds into a thunderous epic with rolling drums and heightened emotions. The video for the track is also fascinating,  apparently  filmed as a continuous seven second shot but then slowed down to create a creepy yet beautiful accompaniment.

2014-02-12 - The Local TV (UK) - SIXTOES @ BUSH HALL

http://blog.thelocal.tv/post/76418870060/30-04-2014-sixtoes-bush-hall

30.04.2014 // SIXTOES @ BUSH HALL

SIXTOES + RACHAEL DADD
WED. 30 APRIL, 2014 | BUSH HALL | 7.30pm
tickets: £10 adv.

Originally a 3-piece, SixToes self-made debut album ‘Trick Of The Night’ was released in 2009 to critical acclaim with Uncut describing it as “Genuinely strange and original - SixToes possess an intricate, idiosyncratic beauty”. Since then, the London based band have become a sextet, collaborated with Josh T. Pearson and Soulsavers (playing strings on ‘Last of the Country Gentlemen’ and ‘The Light the Dead See’ album respectively) and remixed the likes of Depeche Mode and Nick Cave. With the addition of 3 new members, SixToes have been quietly, yet busily honing and developing their sound through intensive, isolated jam and recording sessions in a remote makeshift studio in a disused barn in Norfolk. The result of these sessions is SixToes mark 2 and a new album, the forthcoming ‘The Morning After’, set for release in early 2014.

The first taste of The Morning After was revealed last month in the form of a new single, ‘Low Guns’, which features guest vocals from Depeche Mode’s Dave Gahan and has already had over 30,000 plays on Souncloud. ‘Low Guns’ will be officially released in November on limited cassette and digitally. To mark the release SixToes play a sold-out headline show at St Pancras Old Church, London on the 20th of November.

In the run up to the release of ‘Low Guns’ SixToes have left advanced copies of the cassette single hidden at various locations around the world as part of an ongoing treasure hunt. Cassettes have already been found in London (St Pancras Old Church), Paris (The Louvre), Bristol (Clifton Suspension Bridge), Berlin (Themroc Bar), Manchester (Piccadilly Records and an Army Surplus Shop). Visit the SixToes Facebook page for the latest treasure hunt clues and photos of locations:

‘Low Guns’ is the sound of a band eschewing previously self-imposed rules and developing a more expansive, cinematic, focused and collaborative writing style; the track is brimming with personality like the characters on the London tube platform in the beautifully executed accompanying video.

Inspired by Straylight’s mesmerising slow motion film Glide2 and directed by Henry Cowling, the ‘Low Guns’ video sees ordinary passengers frozen in time alongside make- believe military officials, dancers, showgirls, circus performers, as well as the band members themselves on the platform of Ravenscourt Park station in London as viewed from a passing high-speed tube carriage. Cowling shot the ‘Low Guns’ video at 500 frames per second, enabling 7 seconds of footage to be drawn out into 3 and a half minutes, meaning that the the shoot required meticulous planning to ensure the flashmob style cast of 40 volunteers moved according to plan during the very small window of time.

“Low Guns is sort of a snap shot in time; a moment of complete vulnerability,” adds singer David Greenep. “The soldiers represent natural barriers that I think we create to make sure that certain feelings will not come again.”

2016-06-01 - Depeche-mode.com - SixToes 'Low Guns' limited edition 7 out 01.09.16

http://www.depeche-mode.com/2016/06/01/sixtoes-low-guns-limited-edition-7-out-01-09-16/

SixToes 'Low Guns' limited edition 7 out 01.09.16

In some exciting new release news, or more accurately.. re-release news, the amazing “Low Guns” single from Six Toes featuring Dave Gahan will be released on a very limeted 7″ vinyl single that will be out 01.09.16 via Aby Sho Music. Yes, there was a limited cassette single when it was originally released in 2014, but this will be the first time it’s available on vinyl with a previously unreleased versions of the song that was edited specifically for this version of the single. The Preorder date has yet to be announced, but we will update you when we get that info.

SixToes ‘Low Guns’ limited edition 7″ release by Aby Sho Music.

UK Sextet ‘SixToes’ released their last album in 2014, The Morning After, accompanied by the single ‘Low Guns’ released on limited edition cassette. The beauty of the track was especially expressed by adding presence of the Depeche Mode lead singer Dave Gahan on vocal and harmonica.

Dave was always positive about SixToes music and their remixes of Depeche Mode tracks. Without hesitation Dave accepted SixToes’ proposal to collaborate on ‘Low Guns’.

“I always really liked the remixes that SixToes did for Depeche Mode over the years, so when Anne Carruthers reached out to me about working with the band on Low Guns, I jumped on the opportunity. The band are exceptionally talented, the song connected with me, and I think the video is inspired and fantastic.” – Dave Gahan

״Low Guns ״ single was completely sold out as a cassette release, which was issued in two batches standard and hand numbered back in 2014.

Following huge success of the previous release on cassette, which was more symbolic than audible, SixToes decided to give another life to the track on 7″ vinyl, with unique previously unreleased versions of Low Guns, edited especially for this edition.

Low Guns will be released on ‘Aby Sho Music’ records from Ukraine in strictly limited edition of 250 copies, 200 black and 50 white vinyl.

Tracklist:
A side: Low Guns feat. Dave Gahan (Radio Edit)
B side: Low Guns feat. Dave Gahan (Full Gahan Version Edit)

2016-08-27 - Depeche-mode.com - Exclusive Interview: SixToes

http://www.depeche-mode.com/2016/08/27/exclusive-interview-sixtoes/

Exclusive Interview: SixToes

As Depeche Mode fans, you’re probably already familiar with SixToes for their remixes for the band, but if you missed their single featuring Dave Gahan, you’re in luck, it’s being released again on a 7″ single via Aby Sho Music on September 1st! To warm you up for the “Low Guns” vinyl single, we’re pleased to bring you an interview with David Greenep from SixToes!

Individually or collectively, the members of SixToes are something special. Their talent, their uniqueness, their individuality speaks volumes and it’s no wonder that their creativity connected so closely with the members in and around Depeche Mode. While separately they all have had their own major roles in other projects that stretch from work in engineering, production, recording, and remixing, but the 6 of them come together to produce some of the most beautiful, layered, and textured music worthy of all the praise they are given. As a DM fan, I’m sure you loved their remixes for “Peace”, “Jezebel”, “The Sinner In Me”, and “Come Back”, but you should also explore their albums if you haven’t already. It’s no wonder Dave Gahan was interested in working with them when this project presented itself.

While “Low Guns” was released digitally, there was also a limited edition cassette single that was released on Toe Music back in 2013. After the success of the cassette single, the band decided to breathe some new life into the song and release it again, this time on a 7″ vinyl single featuring the previous unreleased “Full Gahan” version. This is a strictly limited release of only 250 copies, 200 black and 50 pressed up on white vinyl. Just a heads up, we will be giving away one copy of the 7″ in our “Low Guns 7″ Contest” starting on the release date, Sept. 1st.

There are those who argue the opinion that bands need friction to function. The band has grown to six piece on ‘The Morning After’ compared to the line-up of the first record, does having members so diverse, and with so much studio experience, create those moments and how do you deal with making those creative compromises?

Writing and recording the album was an interesting process. We wanted all members of the band to have full input in all aspects of the album. We didn’t want to make another album like “Trick Of The Night” so having this diversity in the band was one way of achieving this.

The band records, produces, and mixes all the music pretty much themselves. Has the idea of bringing a producer on board at some point interest you?

As all members of SixToes have a fair amount of studio experience. I think this has gone some way to creating the unique sound of the album, by eliminating the outside influences. Having said that, we were lucky enough to have Gareth Jones on board to mix many of the tracks…  Including the single “Low Guns”.

Considering Anne’s (Carruthers) resume goes pretty deep into the Mute catalog, remixing Depeche Mode isn’t too far of a stretch, but was there some hesitation to remix them considering how different the music was from your own?

I think this was one of the main reasons we wanted to do the remixes. We had a unique opportunity to completely change the tracks from scratch. We always thrived on the idea of building unique sounding remixes and it was a pleasure to have the support of Mute and Depeche Mode to do this.

Did remixing Depeche lead to Anne Carruthers playing cello on Soulsavers “The Light And Dead See” album or was there already a history there?

I was actually engineering part of the Soulsavers album with Rich Machin. While we were working Rich had the idea of adding the cello sound that he had heard on our remixes. Anne was more then happy to help out and, as always, did an amazing job.

Can you give us your reaction when you hear Dave Gahan say that he “jumped at the opportunity” to work with you?

We were shocked to be honest. We knew that he and the band had enjoyed our remixes and it had taken a bit of courage to ask Dave to sing on “Low Guns” initially. We were really happy to find that Dave was very generous with his time and did an amazing job of his vocals on the track!

The new 7” for “Low Guns” has a previously unreleased “Full Gahan” version, can you tell us about that version and how is is different from the initial release?

We thought for the original single that it would work better as a duet. It has become clear that the fans are also excited to hear the version with Dave singing all the way through.

How did the deal with Aby Sho to release “Low Guns” come about?

Vlad Lee, a friend of SixToes, proposed the idea and arranged a meeting with Andrii Smirnov, Aby Sho Music, Independent Ukrainian Record Label Founder. We loved the creativity of Aby Sho, who release very special vinyl releases and never reprint them. We, as a band, love making unique and precious formats with our releases, so its a perfect fit.

What can we look forward to from SixToes?

SixToes will hopefully be getting together to make some more music in the future… Myself (David) have a new record coming out towards the end of the year.
