http://observator.a1.ro/monden/Andy-Fletcher-revine_25998.html

Andy Fletcher revine
Andy Fletcher, membru fondator al legendarei trupe Depeche Mode, revine in Bucuresti.

2011-01-16 - Side-Line (Belgium) - Depeche Mode's Andy Fletcher gears up for DJ tour

http://www.side-line.com/news_comments.php?id=45689_0_2_0_C

Depeche Mode's Andy Fletcher gears up for DJ tour
Depeche Mode's Andy Fletcher has revealed how psyched he is about jetting off for forthcoming DJ tour, which starts later this month. The long-time member of the synthpop group will kick off his journey on 29 January in Bucharest, Romania, before visiting countries such as the Philippines, Australia, Singapore, Indonesia and China up to 19 March. He will play a lot of new remixes, presumably from the new upcoming remix CD. On the Depeche Mode website, he said: "I am really excited to be coming to a lot of the places that Depeche didn't get to visit on the last tour."
Belgian fans need not worry about Fletch - as he's often known - leaving you out. He will hit your shores on 19 March to play at the Belzik Festival in Herve.
Here's the full schedule:
29 Jan - Ark Club, Bucharest, Romania
5 Feb - Crystal Hall, Kiev, Ukraine
6 Feb - Palladium, Odessa, Ukraine
16 Feb - City Hotel, Sydney, Australia?
17 Feb - Room 608, Melbourne, Australia
18 Feb - Playground Weekender, Sydney, Australia?
20 Feb - Syrup, Hobart, Australia
24 Feb - Republiq, Philippines, Manila?
25 Feb - Kudeta, Singapore
26 Feb - X2, Jakarta, Indonesia
4 Mar - Star Live / DJ Mag Tour, Beijing, China?
5 Mar - Eden, Seoul, Korea?
19 Mar - Belzik Festival, Herve, Belgium
In 2002, Fletcher started his own record label, Toast Hawaii, and signed his band Client, which recently saw the departure of founding member Sarah Blackwood. Client left the label in 2006, while the label itself seems to be lying dormant. Also signed to Toast Hawaii were Legate X, but no news was made public about the status of this band. As well as this, he also DJs. Initially most of his DJ gigs came about while on tour with Client, but he went to tour in his own right as a DJ, playing festivals and clubs in Europe and south America.

2011-01-24 - The AU Review (Australia) - Andy Fletcher Interview

http://www.theaureview.com/interviews/the-au-interview-andy-fletcher-of-depeche-mode-uk

the AU Interview: Andy Fletcher of Depeche Mode
Tom Valcanis

If you’re any way into music, you’ll invariably hear Depeche Mode come up in conversation one way or another. Their near ubiquity in the discourse of modern popular music has cemented them in the minds of millions as pioneers and consistent innovators of electronic music.
Andy Fletcher has been the bassist and synthesizer player for the band since the very start and is part of the core of Depeche Mode. More recently, he has been touring the world solo as a DJ. Andy has planned a visit to Australia and New Zealand in March of this year to showcase the “history of the band” through his eclectic track mixes and performances; although the last he was here as part of the band was back in 1994.
Curiously for an almost all electronic group, metalheads, pop producers and even hip-hop MCs will attest to their keen interest – or even devotion – to the British group, a love that seemingly spans the generations. Andy can even see the shift of demographic in his live shows.
“It was quite incredible – on the last tour, the crowd was very young,” he recalls. “They all stood at the front. Also, weirdly enough there were people bringing their kids. Our audience is a real mixture of everyone, really. It’s quite good.”
For over 30 years Depeche Mode has had a “dream career,” Andy says. From their beginnings as a synthpop band amongst a market saturated with artists with Fairlight CMIs and big dreams in their eyes, Depeche Mode’s profile soared throughout the 1980s with a string of hits and endured well into the 90s with their landmark effort Violator remaining their magnum opus despite competing against more popular mainstream rock bands such as Nirvana. Even so, it hasn’t gone to Andy’s head.
“We’ve been very fortunate. The fact that we’ve been going for this long – we still feel that there’s some good music in us. We started as a pop band when we were very young but we’ve learned a lot. To be still going and to have as many fans as we do, all around the world, it’s phenomenal. We couldn’t ask for more.”
Their fans are not only varied in age but span across all the genres – pop, hip-hop, goth, rock and even heavy metal. Even in the niche genres such as trance and metal one can find covers of famous Depeche Mode cuts. Andy feels it’s a testament to the longevity and versatility of songs written by main songwriter Martin Lee Gore despite not fitting the “mould” of what is or was popular and conventional.
“Well, I think it’s because Martin writes really good songs. He’s a great songwriter. In the 90s we really struggled with the media. It was because rock was more prominent. It was the late 80s actually when all the synthpop died off and rock was back in prominence. All the journalists [at the time] seemed to really like rock music.
“We almost had to battle with them. We had to throw [unsold] cassettes away and things like that. But we have really good relationships with rock bands – the [Red Hot] Chili Peppers and with U2, Metallica.
“Strangely, we were in this position where people from every sort of band seemed to like us. It’s weird when people are in awe of us – like Paul Van Dyk for example, he’s a real pro DJ. It’s like my DJing skills don’t even match up to his and he’s bowing at me saying ‘You’re my hero!’ I mean, we can’t ask for more than that really!”
Starting off as the bassist in Depeche Mode, he was almost “forced” to switch to playing the synthesizer in no small part due to the controlling efforts of a former bandmate. He recalls he was “very upset” by the entire experience.
“Vince Clarke decreed that we’d become an all-electronic band. So then I had to progress from playing bass guitar to playing bass synth. As I’d never played a keyboard before it’s quite difficult. I mean I was trying to play the bass lines that I’d usually have played on a guitar on a keyboard. We didn’t have sequencers, you know! It sort of worked.”
In 1990 for the Violator record, Clarke’s iron clad post-partum decree was repealed and the guitars returned, much to Andy’s delight.
“We had a policy up until then that we’d never use those instruments until we worked with [producer] Flood,” he explains. “We always got the guitars to sound like a synth. But when we worked with Flood, Flood said that was a load of bollocks. He said if ‘you want to play guitar, play guitar.’ That’s when we changed our philosophy.”
Fortunately, Depeche Mode emerged from their non-electronic embargo with a healthy attitude toward all forms of music, expanding their horizons beyond the typical Depeche Mode palette – it’s a view that even prevails in their massive live performances and Andy’s DJ sets.
“It’s been a good progression,” Andy muses. “We have virtually have every element of music from disco to rock to ballads, to whatever. I mean, I do that when I DJ as well, I play a mixture of stuff. I throw it all in, you know?”
Despite the massive success that the band has experienced during its thirty years, the expectations between records and tours by the press and fans alike would be enormous. But Andy says there isn’t – it’s managing their own expectation that occupies their minds.
“I think the toughest thing for us is our own expectations. We don’t really care too much about expectations of other people. It’s more our own expectations – that’s the way we’ve always worked.
“I mean if we weren’t making good records – we’d quit.”

2011-01-24 - Metropotam (Romania) - Interviu: Andy Fletcher (Depeche Mode)

http://muzica.metropotam.ro/interviuri-cu-artisti-romani-si-internationali/Interviu-Andy-Fletcher-Depeche-Mode-art2973073854/

Andy Fletcher (Depeche Mode) va fi prezent in The Ark pe 29 ianuarie cu un DJ set electrizant ce va include mix-uri de piese new wave, hit-uri electro, precum si succese Depeche Mode.

Multumim! Si noi asteptam cu nerabdare concertul tau! Ne vedem in Bucuresti.

Varianta in limba engleza:
First of all I want to ask you what are your feelings about Romania, you’ve been here in the past and you keep coming back? Do you like it here?
Yes, I like it a lot. I also have Romanian friends, good friends, and I always enjoy my trips when I go there.

Do you also like the Romanian audience?
Yes, it's perfect.

Why did you start playing music as a DJ? Do you enjoy more the clubbing scene than the stadium size concerts that you’ve been playing with Depeche Mode?
Well, with Depeche Mode everything is so big, you know. We have lots of people around us all the time. As a DJ I have only have a couple of people that transport the instruments, like three or four people.

But what about the differences between the audiences? Do you feel the audience from the clubs more closer to you?
Of course, the place is much smaller, so even physically they are closer. But, you know, DJ-ing is more of a hobby for me. With Depeche Mode it's different because we are so popular. But early on in our carrier we played in small clubs, so we're used to it.

When did your interest for DJ-ing begin?
Well, it started seven years ago when I hooked out with a band called Client and I was DJ-ing with them on the stage every time I got free time. Obviously, most of the time I was working with Depeche Mode. Now it's good that I have a little time to enjoy the DJ-ing.

What kind of music do you play as a DJ?
I'm playing a mixture, I don't play just one style. I play some house, some electro, some rock and I hope that the audience will have a good time. If they don't I'll play some brand new Depeche Mode remixes we'll be releasing on our remix album which comes out in a couple of months. I think they'll be exciting for the audience.

Do you have some favorite DJs?
Not really. It's strange, for me DJ-ing is a hobby and I don't think I'm an amazing DJ, but I think I play good music.

What about Depeche Mode? How’s that going, any exciting plans for the future with the guys? You said something about a remix album.
Yeah, for the moment Martin is finishing the project (remix album) with Vince Clarke which is sort of a dance, minimal, techno record. And hopefully in a couple of months he'll be back and start writing and we'll try to make another album.

You also had your own label and a restaurant? How’s that going?
Well, the label... I stopped working with anyone at the moment. And the restaurant, I sold it a few years ago. But I try to open a new place at the moment.

A restaurant, a pub, a club?
A restaurant, a pub, a place were they serve food. The important thing is that the people feel comfortable there.

From where do you get your inspiration when DJ-ing?
I try to play some sort of history, maybe, of what might inspired Depeche Mode, music around the band. And, you know, we played some different styles and that's what I try to express with the music that I play as a DJ.

How does an ordinary day from your life look like?
At the moment I have to practice on my DJ-ing for when I come to Bucharest, I do that most of the day. But sometimes I just go in a pub and try to relax.

But you said that DJ-ing is a hobby, so that must be relaxing.
Yeah, but it gets frustrating sometimes. But, yeah, most of the times I get good vibes.

Getting back to Depeche Mode, what’s your favorite period or best memories with the band?
There are lots of memories, we are very lucky, you know, after 30 years we are still very popular. It really is a dream come true. We started very young, we were teenagers. The early days were a fantastic experience. Seeing our songs in the tops, our music on the radio, the very first time when we broke into America and a lot of good memories from lots of places around the world where we played: Paris, New York... We had an incredible carrier.

In the end could you say some words for the Andy Fletcher and Depeche Mode Romanian fans?
Hi, this is Andy Fletcher from Depeche Mode giving the Romanian fans a big "Hello!" and I'm looking forward to see you when I come over.

Thanks and we're also looking forward for your gig! See you in Bucharest.

http://www.romanialibera.ro/cultura/vedete/andy-fletcher-de-la-depeche-mode-bucurestiul-va-fi-printre-primele-orase-in-care-vom-canta-214371.html

M-am plimbat prin New York, Vancouver, Paris, Barcelona, etc.
