Depeche Mode singer asks to appear on frYars debut
Dave Gahan lends Ben Garrett a helping hand

Fryars have got Depeche Mode's Dave Gahan to sing on debut album 'Dark Young Hearts' after a chance studio encounter.
Speaking to NME.COM, Ben Garrett explained that the veteran has contributed vocals to a track called 'Visitor', after walking in while producer and ex-Clor guitarist Luke Smith was working on the song in his New York studio.
"Basically, Luke was doing stuff with Ben Hillier on Depeche Mode's album and Dave came in while they were on down time, heard my music and really loved it and asked to sing on it," Garrett explained. "I'm really excited about it, and when I go over to America we might even do something live together."
The track is set to be made available as a download on myspace.com/fryars ahead of the album's release next year.
Plus, get this week's issue of NME, on UK newsstands now, for a full interview with Fryars about the album.

2009-01-22 - Hidden Houses - Ben Garett interview

http://www.daveshiddenhouses.com

After enjoying Dave's recent collaboration with frYars on the fun new track entitled 'Visitors', Hidden Houses decided to contact Ben Garrett with a few questions about the interaction.

Q: How did you meet Dave and how did he become interested in the project?
A: I've never met Dave in person. Only on skype. Luke Smith, who I produced my album with, was working as the programmer on sounds of the universe. All of the mode heard the album and really liked it and Luke was mixing Visitors in New York on downtime in the studio and Dave gave his vocals to it as he liked the track so much.

Q: How / where were the vocals recorded?
A: The vocals were recorded in New York. Mine were done in Italy a few months before and then we mixed them in London.

Q: Do you think either or both of you learned something musically / stylistically from the interaction?
A: As the only interaction was on Skype, possibly not. Though I do feel that Dave's vocal was perfect for the track. A happy accident as it were. The song is about two men living in a house and going mad with each other. So it is appropriate that there is another male voice in any case. But it's a rather good male voice!

Q: Were you surprised by the level of interest in the song due to Dave's involvement? Have you heard from a lot of Dave / Depeche Mode fans?
A: Yes. I knew it would have some impact, but Dave himself seems to have an abundance of devoted followers. There's an awful lot of Mrs.Gahans!

Q: Where did the idea for the video come from? Were the scenes taken in CA or elsewhere?
A: Luke filmed Dave's contribution to the video in New York. There's 10 minutes of quality entertainment from what they filmed. Maybe one day it will be released upon the world. The rest of the video was done in a studio in Walthamstow, London.

Q: Your music and the video have a retro/80s feel to them - were you a Depeche Mode fan and do you consider them to be a significant influence on your music?
A: I think partly because of my musical process, there are 80s elements, and most obviously in Visitors. And the video was done to mirror the 80s feel to the track. I'm a fan!
Q: Your new album will be out in March; will this be available through itunes, amazon, indie stores?
A: Yes. It should be available in all those places unless something goes very wrong. Buy as many as you can!

Q: Thanks so much again for putting up with crazy Gahan fans.
A: A: My pleasure.

EXCLUSIVE NEW DOWNLOAD: frYars feat. Dave Gahan - Visitors (Stephen Hague Remix) + Original Stream

When you're trying to conjure the solemn euphoria that lurks in disco's darkest corners, allying with past masters of the trade can only aid you in your quest. So it is that "Visitors", a throbbing rush of defiant, decadent clubland pop, comes into this world: 20-year-old Londoner frYars backed up vocally by none other than Depeche Mode's Dave Gahan, while legendary synthpop producer Stephen Hague (Pet Shop Boys, New Order, PIL) comes with a starry-eyed remix. Both their influences are felt; "Visitors" boasting a bassline a major chord change and some TLC away from Gahan's classic "Just Can't Get Enough" and the doomy rush of New Order's "True Faith" - produced by Hague - courses fresh through his jaw-dropping refit. It's the prodigously talented frYars - known to his mother as Ben Garrett - who rules the roost here though, presiding over the track with the same dark sense of romance fellow oddball Patrick Wolf drags around in his gut, lyrics talking of bartered for hearts and lovers living on each other's backs.

2009-09-21 - Metro (UK) - frYars

http://www.metro.co.uk/metrolife/740432-fryars-looks-into-his-dark-young-heart

frYars looks into his Dark Young Heart
Trying to work out how to pronounce the name of one-man band Ben Garrett's musical alter ego is almost as difficult as figuring out how this 19-year-old gained the admiration of someone as respected as Dave Gahan.

The Depeche Mode frontman liked him so much he even contributes backing vocals to the track Visitors and sits right at home with frYars's own darkly glamorous 1980s-infused electro pop.
frYars: Dark Young Hearts
With a distinctive baritone that shares a similar theatrical delivery to that of fellow young troubadour Patrick Wolf, Garrett makes his idiosyncratic mark on a succession of cheesy, synth-based tunes that recall the coolly simplistic hooks of the Pet Shop Boys without capturing their pop splendour.
It all sounds a bit like Jarvis Cocker fronting The Beloved circa Sweet Harmony – but nowhere near as good.

2009-10-12 - muztec (Belgium) - Bandstocks joined by Depeche Mode’s Dave Gahan for fan funded FrYars album “Dark young hearts”

http://www.muztec.com/sellaband/bandstocks-joined-by-depeche-modes-dave-gahan-for-fan-funder-fryars-album-dark-young-hearts.html

Bandstocks joined by Depeche Mode’s Dave Gahan for fan funded FrYars album “Dark young hearts”

Just a few days ago Sellaband launched the news that Public Enemy would try to beg US$ 250.000 together from the Sellaband users. Bandstocks did that stunt a few months earlier with Depeche Mode’s Dave Gahan, more or less that is. Out by the end of this month is the debut album “Dark young hearts” by FrYars. Depeche Mode fans will be pleased to know that the song “Visitors” on the album features Dave Gahan on vocals. The debut album from Fryars features production work by Luke Smith (Clor) and Stephen Hague (of New Order, Pet Shop Boys and OMD fame) and is released on their own label, Fryarcorp, which has been funded by fan based investment site Bandstocks.
Just like Sellaband, Bandstocks is an online community which allows fans and artists to collaborate to produce and market an album. Investors purchase ‘Bandstocks’, official loan stocks, toward the funding of an artist’s album. Unlike traditional record labels, artists receive a large share of the profit and fans have the opportunity to invest and profit, as well.
