2004-06-08 - EW3 - Mode to be cut from Reprise?

News: Mode to be cut from Reprise? Posted by: Peter²

Warner Records are undergoing massive changes, which might result in Depeche Mode being cut from it's roster, alongside nearly 80 other bands including New Order and Barenaked Ladies.

This cut of roster comes in the wake of thousands of employees being fired not too long ago.

At least that's the case according to Pitchfork Media. "Various Warner Bros. recording artists are huddling together, making small talk, and nervously biting their nails as the label, which recently let go more than 1,000 employees, has begun announcing which bands are to be cut from their roster," says their article and goes on to shortlist bands like New Order, Deftones, Barenaked Ladies, and Depeche Mode.

This might not be a bad thing, mind you. Being cut from Warner may well prove to be a blessing in disguise, as the label's support for the band's latest efforts have been anything but impressive. And if they aren't amongst those to get axed, well then they're bound to be the focal point of much more energy and work in the future.

It has been reported that top staff at Warner have already been talking to Mute in London about the upcoming Depeche Mode remix album, so a cut before the release of this seems very unlikely.

2004-06-xx - Record Collector (UK) - The most collectable New Romantic band of all

http://www.depmod.com/forum/viewthread.php?tid=2452

Depeche Mode - The most collectable New Romantic band of all

Famously Basildon's most successful musical export, Depeche Mode played
around with the New Romantic angle for a while before moving off into the
broader, and blander, arena of mid-80s synth-pop, achieving a startling
amount of success in doing so. Although their early image was focused on the
clean-cut grin and quiff of singer David Gahan - many labelled them at this
stage as the New Romantic's boy band - their roots lay surprisingly far
back: their first incarnation had been a 1976 band with the dismal title of
No Romance in China, a duo consisting of keyboardists Vince Clarke and
Andrew Fletcher. Band names were painfully nave back then, lad, and the
next version (formed after Clarke recruited guitarist/keyboardist Martin
Gore) was called French Look (really). After yet another name-change to
Composition Of Sound, Gahan signed up and finally Depeche Mode was born.
Depeche Mode's unique selling point was and remains the expertly layered
synth sounds wich they employed with deft melodic awareness to produce pure
pop tunes. After the song Photographic appeared on Stevo's Some Bizarre
compilation in 1981, a deal with Mute followed and a string of lightweight
but hummable singles (including Dreaming of Me, New Life and Just Can't Get
Enough) saw the band's profile rise through-out the year.
After Clarke left to form Yazoo with Alison Moyet and was replaced by Alan
Wilder, some thought the band's main talent had departed - but to many
observers' surprise, Depeche Mode spent the next couple of years growing up
and introduced a darker, more introspective tone to their music. Two albums,
1983's Construction Time Again and the following years Some Great Reward,
saw them court controversy (Blasphemous Rumours was as dark assynth-pop ever
got, while Master and Servant was a grimly-intoned paean to S&M).Black
Celebration (1986) was even more thoughtful, but by now the band had entered
the rock mainstream. The well-trodden path of addiction awaited Gahan in the
1990s, although he would ultimately conquer his dependency. A far cry from
those fluffy New Romantic days, to be sure...

2004-08-14 - Depechemode.de (Germany) - Neuer Depeche-Mode-Bildband erschienen

http://www.depechemode.de/neuer-depeche-mode-bildband-erschienen-9/

Neuer Depeche-Mode-Bildband erschienen

2004-10-16 - Ask Men (US) - Top 10 Distinct Voices in Music

Top 10: Distinct Voices In Music

By Matthew Simpson

Entertainment Correspondent - Every 2nd Wednesday

Scottish writer Thomas Carlyle once wrote, "Music is well said to be the speech of angels." A life without music is unthinkable, which is why we have radios everywhere, from cars and boats to coffeemakers. Sometimes you'll be driving along when a song comes on the radio; even if you've never heard it before, you don't even need to wait for the chorus or for the DJ to identify the singer.
That's right -- the singer's voice is so distinctive that you immediately recognize the artist. And that's where this article comes in. Below you will find my list of the Top 10 most distinct voices in music. For now, I'm sticking to male artists that boast a unique voice and singing style, as well as a large North American fan base. And although Michael Jackson is a musical genius, he didn't make the cut -- but check out who did...

Number 10

David Gahan
From where I sit, I can hear most of you asking yourselves, "Who the hell is that guy?" Allow me to clear it up for you: for 20 years, Gahan has been the lead singer of synthpop band Depeche Mode. The ensemble's synthetic sound and dark themes have made their evolution to mass popularity a hero's trial.
But thanks to Gahan's seemingly bland and detached vocals, Depeche Mode eventually found success on both sides of the Atlantic. Could be all the drugs he took during his career, but David Gahan sings like he's reading a grocery list. Nevertheless, that's his trademark and what makes Depeche Mode's music so different.
Famous songs: "Enjoy the Silence," "Just Can't Get Enough," "People Are People"
