Depeche Mode - Greatest Hits
Release date to be determined

Congratulations to Depeche Mode! Ultra has sold nearly 3 million copies and has gone gold in the U.S., Germany, U.K., France, Canada, Spain, Sweden, Brazil, Belgium, Denmark, Czech Republic, Hong Kong, and platinum in Italy. The singles from the album were not far behind.... Barrel of a Gun reached No. 1 in four countries (Czech Republic, Sweden, Hungary, and Spain). It's No Good topped the charts in five countries (Czech Republic, Sweden, Italy, Denmark, and Spain). Home reached No. 1 in the Czech Republic and Italy. Useless was released in the United States on November 18th, in which there are four formats of the single available, but no new remixes. The US domestic release contains all four music videos from "Ultra".
With 1997 over, Depeche Mode had released a new album and several brilliant singles, travelled the world doing promotion, performed live and met with their fans again. How would Dave, Martin, and Andy sum up the year then?

Dave: - "It's been a very good year. I'm very pleased with the success of the album, and we've enjoyed working together again. It was good to make a record that we're all pleased with, and it's success has boosted our self-esteem. Now, I'm looking forward to next year".
Martin: - "It's been a great year for us. Ultra received a very postive reaction everywhere, and it was good to find, after a four year absence, that there are still a lot of people who care about us".
Fletch: - "I'm pleased that we have consolidated our position as an influential and still popular group in the 1990's. The high points for me were playing live at the Ultra Launch Parties in London and Los Angeles".

Current Hot News
The Band will be spending early 1998 at home. Only Martin and his family went on a short holiday in the Caribbean. Martin has been busy song-writing recently, but he found some time to go and see some football matches. Dave got together with Robert Smith (The Cure) recently, for a chat and afternoon tea in the restaurant of a New York hotel. The Cure were in New York for some promotional activities, and this also provided an opportunity for Dave to see Daryl Bamonte, who is currently working for The Cure. Fletch has also been in New York recently, and did meet up with Dave while he was there.

•  A reliable source has claimed that the first Depeche Mode song to be recorded for the new Greatest Hits Compilation is titled "Higher Ground". This is unconfirmed, but you heard it here first!
•  Martin Gore is busy writing new material and the band could be in the studio as early as the new year working on a handful of new songs for inclusion in a Double CD package! The album will feature all of Depeche Mode's hits since 1986. This forthcoming package is still untitled and could be released as early as the summer of 1998. Accordingly, the band is considering a World Tour in support of this upcoming release. Stay tuned for more details...
•  Have a chance to name the new Double Album, go to www.depechemode.com (not to be confused with this site), and submit your title. Good luck!!!

Rumor also has it that DJ Shadow did a remix for a non-album Depeche Mode song called "Pain Killer." It evidently has not been released due to the copyright clearance of the samples... I heard this from two sources. If anyone has anymore details (or a copy of the work) let me know! Evidently he was playing it at a Radiohead show in the UK last year.

It appears that Painkiller Kill the Pain Mix from DJ Shadow will be finally seeing official release. According to rumors and from Depeche-Mode.com, on September 7th, a new single from Depeche Mode, "Only When I Lose Myself" will include some b-sides with guest remixers including Dan the Automator and GusGus as well as Painkiller Kill the Pain Mix. I guess that the sample clearance is resolved.

The latest on Depeche Mode: mysterious remix CD and possible festival shows
• In America, an album circulates, with very beautiful remix versions of all Depeche Mode "Ultra" songs in drum’n’bass and electro style. The record is called "Ultra" (remixes by M L Gee) and some insiders suspect Martin Gore is behind it.
At the moment Depeche Mode work feverishly on new material. They still expect to be able to release new songs during next year.
We’re also told they plan to play at several European festivals next summer. /Jens Krause
